Adelphi Paper HangingsAdelphi Paper Hangings LLC is a small, artisanal producer of historically accurate block printed wallpapers for museums and historic institutions, as well as for period designers and for those involved in contemporary design projects.

Its paper hangings have been widely used in historic restoration projects, including projects at Colonial Williamsburg, Historic New England; Historic Kenmore (the Georgian home of George Washington’s sister) in Fredericksburg, VA; the House of the Seven Gables in Salem, MA; President James Monroe’s home Ashlawn, in Charlottesville, VA; President James Buchanan’s home, Wheatlands, in Lancaster, PA; The Davenport House in Savannah; the Adena Mansion in Chillicothe, OH; the Hedge House Museum in Plymouth, MA; Danson Hall and the Wordsworth House in England, among many others. In addition, designers have selected Adelphi papers for use in numerous private residences, both historic and contemporary, in the US and abroad.

Founded in 1999, Adelphi is the only commercial production facility for block printing historic papers in the United States. The company offers wallpapers that are reproduced using the same hand-printing methods and materials employed circa 1720-1860, after which machine printing began to dominant the industry. Its work is based on exhaustive and continuing research into methods, materials, techniques and styles. Each order is individually hand printed by skilled artisans without compromises in quality, historical accuracy or consistency.

Working from original documents that range from an entire wall’s worth of antique wallpaper to a modest box of faded, water damaged scraps still attached to chunks of plaster, Adelphi Paper Hangings has successfully reproduced wallpapers which date from the 1740′s through the 1930’s. By understanding the nature of historic paints, the muting effect of time, as well as the historic context and fashions, Adelphi Paper Hangings can successfully interpret documentary evidence and accurately reproduce the style, character and look of original period documents.

Adelphi chooses patterns for its catalog from its own extensive collection of original wallpaper documents and from exceptional examples licensed from the archives of Historic New England, The Smithsonian Institution, Colonial Williamsburg, Old Sturbridge Village, the New York State Historical Association, the Musée du Papier Peint (Rixheim, France), and from many other historic institutions and private collections.

In addition to its large collection of patterns (which can be viewed on the company website at, Adelphi can provide custom reproduction of patterns not in its catalog, whether from a pattern in the client’s possession or form one in an historic archive. Custom color matching services are also available for all patterns.

In all its work, Adelphi’s commitment to quality, historical accuracy and uncompromised production values offer assurance to customers that Adelphi products are the finest quality block printed papers available on the market today.
