Editor’s Note
Welcome to this latest issue of Early Homes, a special biannual edition of Old-House Interiors. It’s where we focus on American dwellings built before 1850, along with classic period revivals and reproduction houses. Truly, the entire country has been shaped by colonial and Federal buildings—by their architecture and their motifs, their decorative arts and furniture styles. And, of course, the Colonial Revival that began in the 1880s has never entirely abated.
In the pages that follow, you’ll see several different approaches to designing a kitchen for an antique home. One owner opted for clean and neoclassical in white; another embraced distressed finishes and country cabinets. More intimately, come with us upstairs to discover decorating ideas for bedrooms done up in period fashion. There’s a very pretty Colonial Revival bedroom, too, in the venerable Federal house restored in Maine. That feature is filled with inspiring details: a handsome fence and arbor; paint-decorated cabinets, chairs, and stair risers. Then, Esther and Franklin Schmidt show different ways to display and live with primitives, using photos from their most recent book.
