Where to Shop for Architectural Salvage

Use our comprehensive guide to locate an architectural salvage store near you, or to browse the websites of stores across the country, many of which sell their wares online. By Patricia Poore

Some of the “old” houses we feature are actually newly built—but they have the patina of age because architectural salvage was incorporated into their design and construction. Salvage centers can be found in most major cities and all regions, offering everything from windows and doors to hardware, plumbing, and lighting, from tile and stoves to unique architectural fragments. We’ve gathered up significant yards sufficiently organized to have a national clientele. (It’s by no means a comprehensive list; check locally, too, in the phone book and on the Internet as well as with antiques dealers and builders. Go to a search engine and type “salvage,” “architectural salvage,” or your exact need, such as “old bathtubs.”)

Find out how to shop for architectural antique salvage.

These places are “a cross between a Hollywood prop department and an elephant burial ground,” says Thomas O’Gorman, author of New Spaces from Salvage (Barron’s Educ., 2002). All those unattached parts, all those relics of the past—it’s a surreal experience and an architectural education. The urge to take something home and make it your own is almost irresistible.

Salvage lovers, Great article on salvage as it’s becoming quite an interesting topic in restoration. Rescued Relics has been in business about 8 years here in Montgomery, AL. We began by using the bits and pieces left from our restorations here at Old Alabama Town which is a six block area with over 50 restored historic structures. Now we’re not only the destination of many midtown old house lovers and contractors, but for their cast-offs and for their inspiration for new construction. We are operated by Landmarks Foundation of Montgomery, a non-profit, and all of our sales profits go back into the maintenance of our structures, and since our funding has been cut severely, that helps out a lot! Thanks for the salvage plug!

Hello, just wanted to let you know about Old Town Architectural Salvage at 126 North St. Francis in Wichita, Kansas. It’s a store with a large inventory of architectural salvage and antiques.
It’s not my place , just a great store that I go to a lot.
Thanks

For reclaimed woods supply throughout the east coast, including Philadelphia and New York, please also consider us: http://www.newagedwoods.com
Stock varies, as is the nature of the industry, but we always have a selection of attractive flooring and paneling options.

Thank you for putting together this list. A great place in Maryland that also supports a good cause is Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County’s ReStore. You can learn more from our blog at http://www.restorenation.wordpress.com or visit the web site at http://www.habitat-mc.org/restore/index.html. All proceeds benefit Habitat’s efforts to provide decent, affordable housing. Thanks!

St. Louis Architectural Art Company, 2412 Menard, is no longer in business. This website is for a Management Team building company. I called the phone number listed and the man said they still have some things in storage, but they didn’t have the store anymore.

Hi,

Please ad the Old House Society of Bloomington-Normal, IL to your list. Their website is http://www.oldhousesociety.org/

They are located at 214 East Douglas Street, Bloomington, IL Phone number is 309-820-0548.

This is a non-profit organization that has a good-sized salvage warehouse and is engaged in restoration and preservation efforts in central Illinois.

Hello,
My name is James Harrison, I am the manager here at Philadelphia Salvage, we have been open for 8 months now and the place is really taking off, so much that we may be open 6 days a week by summers end to keep up with our customers. I invite you to check out our website, Philadelphiasalvage.com, Twitter, Philasalvage, and on Facebook, Philadelphia Salvage. In short, I would like to request that we be listed as a resource in your listings.

Do you know of any vendors interested in removing and buying historic building materials? I have a home that I will allow a company to come in, remove and purchase some beautiful conditioned building materials in Washington, DC.

Thank you,
Joe

I would HIGHLY recommend Destin’s Mansion Architecturals be added to the list!! He has rooms full of the most beautiful, ornate window and door hardware, etc.
