Where to Shop for Architectural Salvage

Use our comprehensive guide to locate an architectural salvage store near you, or to browse the websites of stores across the country, many of which sell their wares online. By Patricia Poore

Some of the “old” houses we feature are actually newly built—but they have the patina of age because architectural salvage was incorporated into their design and construction. Salvage centers can be found in most major cities and all regions, offering everything from windows and doors to hardware, plumbing, and lighting, from tile and stoves to unique architectural fragments. We’ve gathered up significant yards sufficiently organized to have a national clientele. (It’s by no means a comprehensive list; check locally, too, in the phone book and on the Internet as well as with antiques dealers and builders. Go to a search engine and type “salvage,” “architectural salvage,” or your exact need, such as “old bathtubs.”)

Find out how to shop for architectural antique salvage.

These places are “a cross between a Hollywood prop department and an elephant burial ground,” says Thomas O’Gorman, author of New Spaces from Salvage (Barron’s Educ., 2002). All those unattached parts, all those relics of the past—it’s a surreal experience and an architectural education. The urge to take something home and make it your own is almost irresistible.

I’d suggest adding Old (or Olde) Bostonian in Dorchester (Boston), MA:

Also, specifically for old plumbing fixtures and radiators: in Somerville, MA

I just re-opened an architectural salvage location in Madison Wisconson and would love to be listed in your directory. Deconstruction Inc. is once again open for business at 1010 Walsh Rd Madison WI 53714. You can find us on Facebook, call 608.960.0110 or at Deconstruction Inc. First opened in 1986 but had to shut down for the past few years due to health issues of the owner, I am now working with her to bring it back to life. From what I can find online I may have the largest and most diverse inventory in the state!

Brilliant list of architectural salvage suppliers in the US, are you looking to list companies from over the pond? We’re based in the UK and do a very similar sort of thing with cast iron radiators – we salvage and custom build radiators in a traditional Victorian style… your thoughts would be welcome!

I have an old warehouse built in at least the mid 1930s. It is huge and there is lumber, there are doors, there are structural tin tiles, old knobs. Most of the warehouse, I have not got to go through the warehouse because I have been too busy which I will regret that for a long time. But I would regret it even further if I did not reach out to people who would appreciate all the cool things in there .
We have just found out that our son requires medical attention and I am selling the warehouse at a very cheap price this month.
However, when the realtor and I were doing a walk through for pricing the building for a quick sale, she made the comment that the items in the warehouse were so unique and that the items in there would be of great value to people who restore. So before I sell it, I wanted to reach out and see if you or someone you know may be interested in maybe seeing the warehouse.
If you or anyone you know might be interested please give me a call. This won’t be available next month cause the building will be sold because like i said, I have to but please consider at least looking at it.
It used to be a very nice business but became a warehouse. It is in paintsville ky but well worth the trip there.
    Thank you,
    June B.

Starting off by restoring our 150+ year old home we fell in love with salvaging and finding new homes for the falling down old houses and barns that were facing decay or death by bulldozer. We have vintage doors from old farm houses, barn wood, barn gates, bead board, antique windows, wood flooring, siding, antiques, tools, tables, chairs, and some of the most unique and random items for sale in our warehouse! We are located in the NW corner of South Carolina, just at the edge of the best kept secret in SC, the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. We are a hub’s and wife business doing what we love to do so come drop by or shoot us an email to schedule an appointment (as we don’t have a store front) to come visit the warehouse!
    Happy Salvaging!
