Vertical siding composed of wide boards that do not overlap, and the narrow strips, or battens, that are nailed over the spaces between the boards. Early 19th-century tastemaker A. J. Downing recommended board-and-batten as an American variant for vernacular cottages in the chalet and Carpenter Gothic styles. In interiors, board-and-batten paneling was a simple alternative to Victorian wallcoverings.
