Saving an Eclectic Colonial House

Surrounded by overgrown weeds, the Colonial house was a mishmash of three buildings from three different centuries. With its rusted tin roof, crumbling foundation, broken windows, and doors falling off their hinges, demolition seemed the only solution.

Architects cherish its grand informality, Colonial Revivalists appreciate its simple forms and classical allusions, and neo-Victorians exult in its embrace of Islamic and Japanese forms alongside Georgian. Touring Manhattan’s Lower East Side

Locals have begun calling this part of the borough of Manhattan “LES”—that’s the Lower East Side, a four-square-mile corner nestled between Chinatown and the East Village. (The modern LES Historic District is smaller than the historical boundaries of the neighborhood, which extended north to 14th Street.)
