An embossed, paper-based wallcovering (about the weight of cardboard), sold "raw" so the paint-decorator might glaze, polychrome, gild, or faux-finish it. In formal Victorian rooms of the late 19th century, embossed papers were common treatments for the section of the wall below the chair rail.
