The year is 1962. The client is Barbie, her designer Mattel. Wow, was that Barbie ahead of the times! Her dream pad is a Mid-century Modern ranch, complete with low, slim furniture and a hi-fi. The place is cool and practically androgynous, unlike the candy-pink palaces she’s lived in since the 1990s.

The first Barbie Dream House is remarkable for its product design (the box is the house, which folds up to be carried).

With its colorful Scandinavian furniture and clean lines, this house was downright aspirational for little girls of the Sixties.

Notice the Queen Anne painting on the wall?
BTW, you can buy an authentic reproduction of the 1962 cardboard house. Look online.
