A Short Course on Cladding: Part 1

Clapboards, shingles, and stone cladding are timeless, so it’s no wonder all three have made a comeback for houses built in this century. Just be sure any new materials match the quality of those on the house.

Reglazing Windows

The glass panes in a window are called glazing. Whether you’re reglazing windows during restoration or because of an errant baseball, you’ll have to seal between the glass and wood muntins and frame with “putty”—a word still used to describe the material that keeps weather out of the joints.

Sprucing Up the Entryway

Nothing is more welcoming for family and guests than being greeted by a shipshape entry. Freshen up with these three doable projects: Hang an elegant door knocker, fix a sticky door, and perk up the trim.

Painting Double-Hung Sash

Carelessly painted windows are frequently stuck forever and one regrettable reason homeowners purchase replacements. Neither the prep nor the painting is complicated, however.
